During our recent adventure in Japan, I found myself making a suggestion multiple times that you would n-e-v-e-r hear me say at home: “How about we have lunch at 7-Eleven?” I know this sounds crazy, but bear with me. Japanese convenience stores, known as ‘konbini,’ are on a whole other level. They offer a fresh and varied selection of bento boxes, sandwiches and sushi. They’re quick, easy on the wallet, and widely available. Additionally, they’re an integral part of daily life and culture in Japan.
Major chains
- 7-Eleven – known for their freshly prepared grab and go options.
- Lawson – best known for their “Karaage-kun” fried chicken.
- FamilyMart – famous for their own brand of fried chicken called “FamilyMart chicken.”
- Ministop – renowned for their soft-serve ice cream.
- Daily Yamazaki – this is a smaller chain, famous for their baked goods.
Locations
In larger cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, you can practically find a konbini on every street corner.
Hours
Most konbini are open 24/7.
Products
During our trip, we often opted for konbini as a quick and affordable lunch option. Some of our favorites included the fresh egg sandwiches, seaweed and plum wraps, and the karaage fried chicken sandwiches. And let’s not forget the snacks! So many snacks!!
Checking out
Paying was a breeze thanks to tap-to-pay options. Often we paid with our digital Suica cards but we also used ApplePay and regular tap-to-pay with credit cards. Easy peasy.
Extra perks
Konbinis are generally clean, very well organized and fast. An extra bonus: in the summer they have air conditioning!!
Conclusion
In short, if you’re planning a trip to Japan, don’t underestimate the awesomeness of Japanese convenience stores. Whether you’re in the mood for Japanese snacks or a quick, affordable lunch, you’ll find a konbini on nearly every street corner, and I guarantee they won’t disappoint.
