Southwest Airlines is undoubtedly one of the best in terms of flexibility and affordability. Southwest will frequently come in hot with flash sales and promo codes, significantly slashing fares (sometimes up to 50%!). But what happens if you have already booked a flight and suddenly that flight has drastically gone down in price? No problem. Southwest offers to re-price your bookings so you can take advantage of lower fares. Follow this step-by-step guide on how to rebook when a Southwest flight goes on sale.
How to rebook your flight
Step 1:
- Login to your Southwest account and click “My Account” in the top right-hand corner.
- You’ll then see “My Upcoming Trips”
- Find the flight you would like to rebook and click “Change Flight”
Step 2:
- Select the date and route you want to search and click “Make Updates.” In this case, I just want to rebook my exact same flight (but for a lower cost) and so I will make sure the departure date stays the same.
Step 3:
- Find your flight and double-check you will be getting money back (the fare will display as -$). In my case, the cost of my flight has dropped by $35!
- Click “Review Changes”
Step 4:
- Review your changes and click “Review Passenger and Pricing”
Step 5:
- Double check your passenger info is correct and then confirm the changes.
- You’ll receive a confirmation email and your points or Travel Funds will update accordingly.
- If your refund comes in the form of Travel Funds, don’t forget to use those the next time you book a trip!
If you booked your flight with cash:
- Wanna Get Away fares: The difference in fare will be banked into your Travel Funds as a credit. You have one year from the original flight booking to use the credit. These are nontransferable, which means only you can use the Travel Funds.
- Wanna Get Away Plus fares: The difference in fare will be processed exactly the same as Wanna Get Away fares, except this Travel Fund can be transferred (only once) to another person (who must also be a Rapid Rewards Member).
- Business fares: You’ll receive a cash refund back to the form of payment you used to book the original ticket.
If you booked your flight with points:
- The difference in points will instantly be credited back to the account from which they came.
Conclusion
Southwest runs frequent promos and sales. Remember to get in the habit of checking your existing bookings to see if the price has dropped. It’s a quick and easy process to rebook when a Southwest flight goes on sale and recoup some money or miles while you’re at it!
